Wouldn’t it be nice if . . .

So, 2013 is upon us. Will it be like so many other years in which high hopes were slivered on the shards of broken dreams or will we find enough optimism in the inevitable ocean of challenges to approach each new day with vigour, light-heartedness and a commitment to leave a positive influence on those we meet?

Wouldn’t it be nice if . . . elected representatives in every jurisdiction in the world properly represented voter interests instead of their own?

Wouldn’t it be nice if . . . the potential of face-to-face communication won back many of those lost to mediated communication, especially social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter

Wouldn’t it be nice if . . . despots, thugs and charlatans like President Assad of Syria could be erased from the annals of history and their people allowed to enjoy freedom from tyranny?

Wouldn’t it be nice if . . . someone discovered how to put the cork back in the genie bottle of global warming and let our beautiful planet Earth recover from the huge indignities humankind has heaped upon it?

Wouldn’t it be nice if . . . Japan and other nations stopped hunting and killing whales?

Wouldn’t it be nice if . . . motor vehicles could be made safe enough to overcome the idiocy of some and the sheer misfortune of others that cost so many people their lives and the even worse toll of brain and other injuries that cripple for life?

Wouldn’t it be nice if . . . all the wasted food of the world could magically be used to feed the starving?

Wouldn’t it be nice if . . . selflessness supplanted selfishness for at least some of the time?

Wouldn’t it be nice if . . . religions were not so competitive?

Wouldn’t it be nice if . . . we all appreciated what we have instead of constantly chasing what we wish we had?

Wouldn’t it be nice if . . . if sport fishermen were subjected to the same barbaric oppression they impose on extraordinary marine life before tagging them and releasing them in the deluded belief they have done something clever?

Wouldn’t it be nice if . . . air travel could be achieved without airports?

Wouldn’t it be nice if . . . women could be freed from the fear of those men who abnegate their humanity in the pursuit of lust and insecurity?

Wouldn’t it be nice if . . . the resort to violence was not such a deeply ingrained trait of humanity?

Wouldn’t it be nice if . . . we imagined an idyllic world and worked to make it a reality?

There we go again: wishing and hoping and dreaming. But there are worse ways to start a new year. Let us make 2013 a great year.
