The loss of moral authority

It is interesting to note the Catholic Archbishop of Brisbane, Mark Coleridge, admonishing the Queensland Premier and Deputy Premier for promoting legislation decriminalising late-term abortions.

Both of Queensland’s parliamentary leaders are women and both are apparently believers in Catholicism.

Going for the jugular, Archbishop Coleridge said such legislation would make Queensland like Nazi Germany. More so, he made public comment that the Deputy Premier had been admonished by her church for campaigning to decriminalise abortion.

The Archbishop continued kicking the two women, questioning whether they were simply Catholic in name. He also slammed their support for anti- domestic violence campaigns as hypocritical in light of their support for the abortion legislation.

His final insult was to question whether the Deputy Premier was supporting the legislation simply to garner community support in her own electorate and that she appeared to be differentiating political judgment from moral judgment.

Well, isn’t that just a little black kettle calling two pots black!

Questioning the moral integrity of two members of your own flock publicly through the media is hardly charitable, far less an act of grace. Impugning their beliefs as similar to Nazism is, at best, bullying and, at worst, vile misogyny.

To align pregnancy termination with domestic violence is repugnant, particularly when this slur is directed at two women who are, on this issue, champions of decency.

To propose that elected representatives should not seek the views of their constituency or that they should ignore their voters’ wishes is a denunciation of democracy.

All of which is rather strange coming from a leader of a church that has been mired in the most shameful abuse of both canonical and civilian law through the molestation and rape of minors for decades untold.

Lashing out at others when deeply embarrassed is hardly an uncommon reaction but the Archbishop’s public utterances would surely be better directed to cleaning up his own household before lecturing the rest of the world on how to lead their lives?

And he dares accuse others of differentiating political judgment from moral judgment. Get outta here!
